Abstract

The Jelly fishes known as the largest Coelenterata. They are exclusively marine organism in which the medusa stage is the dominant form Medusa consists largely of gelatinous mesaglea or "jelly". The body is shallowly convex above and concave below and is fringed by a row of closely spaced delicate marginal tentacles. They feed on the small fishes, planktons, or particles, trapped in mucus and conveyed to the mouth by flagella on the oral arms. Respiration and excretion are presumably performed by the whole body surface. The both sexes are alike but separate. Asexual reproduction is limited to larval stages. In sexual reproduction, sperm from the testes of the male pass out of its mouth and penetrate into the enteron of the famale to fertilize the eggs produced in ovaries. The zygotes emerge to lodge and develop into ciliated planula larvae.
The largest group belong to the order Semaeostomeae and Rhizostomeae which are in general inhabit the coastal waters of all oceans and of all zones and may occur in enormous numbers. They float quietly and can swim feebly by rhythmic contractions of the bell but are largely at the mercy of currents and waves. The jelly fishes which are being considered as a menace by the fisherman are gaining importance as a valuable food item of high protein content The processing from the fresh to the good quality of the finished product is carries out in several stages. In Indonesia the processing involves the displacement of body fluids of the animals by salt solution in a slow and long process.
