Abstract

Composites are widely used in marine applications due to their lightweight, resistance to corrosion and fatigue, and high specific stiffness and strength. This study used vinylester resin and woven cloth e-glass fiber fabricated by VARI methods. The composites were immersed in natural sea water for 6 months. The weight gain and mechanical properties of composites before and after seawater immersion were evaluated. The failure characterization and spectroscopy analysis of the composites were observed using SEM and FTIR. The results exhibit the degradation of mechanical properties after sea water immersion. The highest degradation occurred in the compressive properties of the composites with a 60% decrease in compressive strength.
