Abstract

This paper demonstrates the joint method of ground response and structural dynamic analyses for building inspection under a large megathrust earthquake for the sports education building at the University of Bengkulu, a structure in the earthquake-prone zone of Indonesia, and emphasises its practical implications. A thorough site investigation is conducted to determine soil penetration and resistance. The motion from the subduction earthquake scenario within 20 years is used for ground response. The acceleration time history at the foundation-based layer is used for structural dynamic analysis. The weak structures are inspected based on over-strength conditions and stress ratio. The weak structures are treated using retrofitting methods to increase the accommodated load capacity. A structural dynamic analysis is then conducted to check the structure’s condition. The results showed that the seismic propagated wave could amplify at a weak layer. Therefore, careful consideration of the pile tip and the quality of structural materials plays a vital role in structural performance. The results show that the retrofitting method indicates an improvement in structural performance. With its practical implications, the joint method implemented in this study plays a crucial role in enhancing the safety and resilience of structures in earthquake-prone areas.
