Abstract

Various parties, such as not-for-profit organizations and social enterprises, have begun to assist in how the public should participate in and support sustainability. This study explores how these organizations work and grow in impact. We conducted qualitative studies by employing observations and in-depth interviews with several social enterprises and not-for-profit organizations. We found that four pillars need to be manage by an organization that focuses on impact to get high legitimacy and to grow. These were discovered through interviews with eight not-for-profit organizations and social ventures operating in Indonesia. 1) A transformation strategy for social change that incorporates the three E’s (education, empowerment, and entrepreneurship); 2) establishing the principle of mission with fairness and integrity; 3) developing an organizational culture that is quick to learn and adapt; and 4) establishing a strategy for stakeholders, resources, and financial management. Three stages of organizational growth that might have an influence were also identified in this study.
