Abstract

This research discusses the phonological description of the Dayak Bentian (DB) language, its comparison with other Dayak languages, and its relation to Austronesian language patterns, as part of language documentation. The research was conducted in the Dayak Bentian community, focusing on the collection of linguistic data through recording, transcription, translation, and editing. The transcription process utilized the ELAN program. The collected data was then analyzed using a lexicophonemic and phonemic phonology approach to identify and classify the sounds of the DB language. This study identifies a complex DB phonological system comprising 7 basic vowels, elongated vowels, diphthongs, and unique consonant clusters, like [pm], [tn], and [kŋ], which are referred to as post-consonantal nasalization. This analysis provides critical insights into phonological patterns that differentiate DB language from other Dayak languages. These features highlight the language's Austronesian roots alongside local innovations. The study emphasizes the importance of detailed documentation to preserve the DB language's phonological system, ensuring its continuity and contributing to further research on its linguistic complexities.
