Abstract

The objective of this study is to make a preliminary design of sanitary landfill for Batam Island, Indonesia. The excavated trench/cell method was proposed to replace the conventional method, open dumping. A feasibility study concerning with site selection was conducted by the Department of Engineering of the University of Indonesia in 1993 and there will be three sites prepared for sanitary landfill. Such sites include Telaga Pungkur, Bukit Samyong, and Muka Kuning.

Required acreage for landfilling is estimated about 2.9 hectare. This estimation was calculated based on solid waste generation rate, average depth of compacted solid waste, and compacted specific weight of solid waste in landfilling. In addition, leachate and gas produced from landfill will be managed properly to ensure that no contaminants may affect public health as well as the surrounding environment. The leachate and gas will be transferred to the separate treatment facilities for further processing and usage if applicable.
