Abstract

The understanding of fluid flow is important in the design of civil structures which interact with water, especially coastal structures. Such an understanding might be obtained by analytical approach, field study, and hydraulic modeling of certain conditions.

This research studied mathematical model using finite different method and the method of characteristic (MOC) to be applied on mild slope equation (MSE) and shallow water equation respectively. MSE is an eliptic partial differential equation, which is unable to simulate wave reflection, but can be solved quickly. The MOC was employed for comparison since it has been shown to be reliable for simulating fluid flow in the harbor basin (Triatmadja 1990).

The research concluded that MOC is aplicable for simulating fluid flow in the harbor basin both for small and finite amplitude. When simulating fluid flow in the coastal area with a gentle slope, the discrepancy of the results, between those given by MSE and analytical solution is 5%. The use of MSE for simulating MOC. The discrepancy might by grid length fluid flow in the harbor area produced a significant error when compared with assumption adopted for wave propagation along close boundary with a certain angle. The assumption was that the wave direction parallel to the close boundary during MSE simulation
