Abstract

ABSTRACT
ANALYSIS OF CARBON EFFECT TOWARD PHOSPHORUS SEGREGATION ON FERRITIC
ALLOY GRAIN BOUNDARY USING AES. Phosphorus (P) element in ferritic alloy for pressure vessel
material in nuclear power plant must be limited, since P atoms segregated in grain boundary and can causes
material embrittlement. Addition of carbon (C) into ferritic alloy can improve P character. Carbon increases
grain boundaries cohesion strength and suppresses the occurrence of embrittlement. Investigation of P and C
effects in ferritic alloy needs to be done, since both of these elements are always available in ferritic alloy.
Aim of this study is to obtain effect of C toward phosphorus segregation in grain boundaries of ferritic alloy.
The method used chemical analysis of fracture facet of ferritic alloy contained P and C elements used Auger
Electron Spectroscopy (AES). The two ferritic alloys notation by MA and MAC that contains of P and C
dominance respectively. Analysis has been observed toward the occurrence of P and C spectrums in MA and
MAC materials respectively. As the conclusion that C dominance in material MAC affected to phosphorus
segregation in grain boundary of MA material. C atoms displace P atoms from grain boundaries of ferritic
alloy therefore C atoms segregated to grain boundary and increased cohesion strength of material grain
boundaries.
