Abstract

SYNTHESIS AND CHARACTERIZATION OF ACRYLIC ACID, ACRYLAMIDE AND
THEIR MIXTURES GRAFTED ONTO RAYON FIBER FOR ION EXCHANGER
Synthesis and characterization of grafted acrylic acid (AA) , acrylamide (Am) and their
mixture (AmAA) onto rayon fiber as ion exchange have been carried out. The grafting
conducted by pre-irradiation technique in a nitrogen/inert atmosphere. Solvent used in the
grafting is methanol-water mixture with composition of 10:90 (v/v). The objectives of this
research are to find out the optimum conditions for grafting process, and to characterize graftcopolymer
that can be used as ion exchanger. Parameters of the process studied in this research
are total irradiation dose, radical stability, monomer concentration, reaction time and
temperature of the grafting.
The results also showed that grafting percentage increases with the increase of total irradiation
dose, acrylic acid and acryalmide concentration, reaction time and the temperature. It can be
concluded from the results that the optimum conditions for acrylic acid monomer are as follows:
total irradiation dose 10 kGy, monomer concentration 40% (v/v) ,reaction time 15 minutes and
reaction temperature 45°C, the maximum grafting percentage obtained was 530 %. The
optimum conditions for acrylamide monomer are as follows: total irradiation dose 8 kGy,
monomer concentration 30% (v/v) , reaction time 30 minutes and reaction temperature 70°C,
the maximum grafting percentage obtained was 470 %. For the mixture of acid and amide the
optimum conditions were as follows: total irradiation dose 8 kGy, monomer mixture
concentration 30 % (v/v) , reaction time 60 minutes and reaction temperature 45°C, the
maximum grafting percentage was 300% .
