Global news model for calculation of nitrogen and phosphorus waste in the coastal waters of Java

Global NEWS (Nutrient Export from Watersheds) is a model that can be used for the calculation of nitrogen, phosphorus and carbon export by the river toward coastal waters. The model has successfully been applied at both the regional and global level, using analysis of past trend trends to predict future trends. The model showed a tendency of nitrogen and phosphorus levels to increase in coastal waters with successive years, both elements were being detrimental to aquatic lifes. Prediction of future problems allows for them to be overcome by a ‘proactive and reactive’ approach, considering action before the problem worsens and action after the problem arises. We presented the Global NEWS model results by using the Millennium Ecosystem Assessment (MEA) scenarios as the basis for the analysis of future trend, in the coastal waters pollution of Java by selected rivers. In the past, the selected rivers showed significant increase in nitrogen and phosphorus levels. Predicted future trends varied among scenarios and nutrient forms. We concluded that the coastal waters pollution will continue to increase during the coming decades. This research illustrated how the application such as the Global NEWS could assist the local environment management aiming at the control of polluted the rivers on Java.
