Abstract
Mythology of "Nabeteng I" In sosopan Village “Nabeteng I' is a myth about tigers that the people of Sosopan village believe are able to monitor the behavior of people's daily lives. This belief has been packaged in the cultural customs of the local community. Researchers try to uncover these myths, because in the era of globalization it turns out that people still believe in it. By using a qualitative ethnographic approach, based on interviews with a number of informants, as well as observations in the field, also by collecting various information from existing writings, from print and electronic media. The results showed that the people in Sosopan village interpreted the character "Nabeteng I" as being metaphysical and sacred which functions as a social controller for the relationship between humans, as well as the relationship between humans and their natural environment. As a social controller, "Nabeteng I" is considered to have the ability to provide punishment for those who violate local customary rules. The most severe punishment is death which is considered unnatural. Humans are creatures that give meaning in life. Although for people of other cultures, it is considered irrational, but for the people who support it, myth is considered rational.
