Abstract
According to Bergson, both philosophy and science doubt the existence of human free will because they fail to distinguish the concepts of ‘quality’ from ‘quantity’, and the concept of ‘time’ from ‘space’. This causes human consciousness to b understood as a causal series of ‘mental states’ an time is understood as a ‘place in which events occur in a linear sequence. Therefore, they see both from the psychological and physical aspects, human actions are always determined by causality. Bergson argues that the concept of time so far understood by Western Philosophy is merely a spatialized time, instead of the fundamental form of time we experienced and lived as human beings. To arrive at this experienced time, analytical methods must to be abandoned and we need to enter the realm of intuition, in which time could be understood as duration(durée). It is only within the realm of intuition that human free will could be found and understood.
