Abstract
The purpose of this study is to see if using the STAD type cooperative learning method in the teaching and learning process of civics subjects improves students' active participation and learning outcomes in classes VIII-7 at SMP Negeri 01 Lebong. This research is classroom action research, which is a form of research that is reflective in nature by taking certain actions in order to improve and enhance learning practices in the classroom. The subjects of this research were students of classes VIII–7 at SMP Negeri 01 Lebong. The results showed that the application of the STAD-type cooperative learning method in civics subjects can increase active participation and student learning outcomes. This is evident from the results of observations of increased active participation in student learning in cycle II. In Cycle I, the number of students who carried out active participation that met moderate criteria was 20; the score obtained was still below 70. Those who met the good criteria included 13 students who scored at least 70. Only 9 students met the moderate criteria in Cycle II, while 25 met the good criteria. From these data, it can be seen that there is an increase: in Cycle I, those who met moderate criteria decreased from 20 to 9 students in Cycle II, while those who met good criteria in Cycle I were 13 students, increasing to 25 students in Cycle II. From these results, it can be said that the active participation of students has increased because it has met the predetermined criteria, where those who participate in active participation are at least 23 students who obtain a minimum score of 70. In civic education, from the first cycle stage, the average obtained was 74.09, which rose to an average of 81.96 at the second cycle stage. From this average, it can be seen that there was an average increase of 7.87 from cycle I to cycle II. This shows that the acquisition of average student scores from cycle I (74.09 points) increased significantly in cycle II with an average score of 81.96 points.
