Abstract
Humic substances are ubiquitous in nature, occuring in soils, lakes, rivers and in marine environments. In marine environment, humic acid had several roles i.e. it is able to built complex compounds with heavy metals that reduced their toxicities. Humic acid is also able to contribute nitogen to the environment through decomposition, and, hence, to increase productivity. The analytical separation of humic compound from natural waters has usualy been carried out by methods of adsorption. Many workers have favoured inorganic adsorbents such as activated carbon, alumina silica gel magnesia and calsium carbonate. Higher recoveries can be achieved by the use of organic adsorbents, such as nylon, polyamide powder and microporous polystyrene beads (amberlite XAD). The spectropho tome trie ultra violet visible curves of the solution of humic acid have monotonous course. The absorbance increases with decreasing wavelength but no minima or maxima were observed. The ratio between the optical densities at 465 and 665 nm (E4/E6) has been used to characterize humic acid. One of the main characteristic feature of infra red spectra of humic acid is the preponderance of bands related to oxygen containing functional groups such as carboxyls, phenolic and alcoholic hydroxyls, quinons and carbonils.
