Abstract
CARBON DIOXIDE. Carbon dioxside is a chemical compound which consist of one atom of carbon and two atoms of oxygen, gaseous form at room temperature, easily dissolve in water and colorless. It forms an important compound for all plants in the photosynthetic process. In general the carbon dioxide concentration of sea water ranges between 1.5 – 2.5 µg atom C/l (18 ppm–30 ppm). It is originated from air through diffusion or brought by rainwater, and as the product of animal respiration as well as of organic decomposition by microorganisms. Carbon dioxide compounds can be in the ionic form (HCO3, CO3) as well as in the molecular form (CO2, H2CO3). These four compounds act as buffer to netralize the excess of acid or basic in seawater.
