Abstract

CENTRE FOR OCEANOLOGICAL RESEARCH AND DEVELOPMENT OF THE INDONESIAN INSTITUTE OF SCIENCES OR PUSLITBANG OSEANOLOGI - LIPI was officially founded in 1970 under the Presidential Decree No. 10 dated 22 January 1970 with the name Lembaga Oseanotogi Nasional (LON)-LIPI However, its history dated back to the early of the 20th century with the establishment of a small-semipermanent building in the Sunda Kelapa area, Jakarta, named the Visscherij Station te Batavia or the Fishery Station. This station was founded at the initiative of Dr. J.C. KONINGS-BERGER, a Dutch zoologist, the Head of the Zooloogical Museum, Bogor. To Extend its scientific activities, the Zoological Museum, one of the sections of 'sLand Plantentuin (Bogor Botanical Garden), in the midst of December 1905 established the Fishery Station as its branch to carry out research on marine fauna of economic importance.
In January 1914 the Dutch East Indies Government founded the Afdeeling Visscherij or the Fishery Section which stood directly under the organization of the Agriculture Division of the Department of Agriculture, Crafts and Commerce. The Visscherij Station te Batavia then functioned as a body which carried out research on basic marine science. In its development the semipermanent Visscherij Station has been subjected to several changes in name, such as Laboratorium voor het Onderzoek der Zee, the Lembaga Penelitian Laut (Institut of Marine Research), as well as the organizational structure and status. Finally, in the midst of December 1970, the Institute of Marine Research was elevated into LON—LIPI, a national institution with main functions of scientific research on the Indonesian and adjacent seas.
Since then LON-LIPI has developed, and established two oceanological stations. The first one was the Ambon Research Station, situated on the Ambon Bay in the Mottucas, established in 1973. The second one was the Pulau Pari Oceanological Station in the Bay of Jakarta which was established in 1976. The following is the history of LON - LIPI from its first foundation in the Midst of December 1905 until the Midst of December 1985, based on an intensive literature study supported by personal notes and experiences as well as personal communication with the staffs. Through the reorganization of LIPI, the National Institute of Oceanology (LON-LIPI) in 1986 became Pusat Penelitian dan Pengembangan Oseanologi or the Centre for Oceanological Research and Development.
