Abstract
Tripang fisheries represent ancient inshore fishery resources of some Asian and Pacific countries, lite most common edible species fall under the following genera : Holothuria, Actinopyga, Thelonota, Bohadschia, and Stichopus. Holothuria (Metriatyla) scabra and Holothuria (Microthele) nobilis/fuscogilva form the species which are almost exclusively used as tripang or beche-de-mer in many countries in the Indo-West Pacific region. World landings have been dominated by Japan and Korea. Annual Indonesian tripang production varies between 198 000 kilograms to 1 318 000 kilograms. The holothurians are collected by divers in 5 to 15 meters deep from coral reef water and lagoon areas. The article also discussed the processing and quality of tripang as well as several aspects of their mariculture.
