Abstract
THE ROLE SEAGRASS IN THE SHALLOW WATER ENVIRONMENT. The seagrass bed is one of the most productive marine ecosystem. It fixes carbon organic then entering food chain either through direct consumption or through decomposition process. The seagrass bed is the habitat of various biota, those which live in waters below leaves canopy as well as in sediment The seagrass also function as sediment trapper in order to enhance the stability of water below the surface and at the same time make the water cleaner and be able to avoid erosion. The seagrass can absorb phosphate in the sediment and be applicable to epiphytic algae, where the epiphytes, inturn, can fix nitrogen so that the dissolved nitrogen in the water get the way to its host. Rhtophere bacteria of several species of seagrass can fix nitrogen. The nitrogen in the plant system can be used by epiphytic algae, either through its host or through the enrichment of the seawater.
The seagrass can be directly consumed by people and used as raw-material for paper, animal food-stuff and fertilizer. The relationship between seagrass and fish was discussed in the detailed including the role of the seagrass bed as nursery ground, shelter and grazing area as well as direct food for herbivorous fish.
