Abstract

In regard geographical characteristics of the Molluscas Islands, it is suggested the boats have played an important role in the daily life of the Molluscans since prehistoric period. A boat may be benefited for economic activities such as transportation purposes or communication needs. Subsequently, these economic role apparently had influenced the philosophical values of the Molluscas on the boats. Hence, boats were not regarded to have merely practical function, but also symbolic significance. Such phenomenon is apparently indicated by the use of boat as theme and concept to visualize its symbolic trait in many past cultural material and archaeological sites in the Molluscas. The article discusses many visualization of a boat including its manifestation onto architectural design and semi-macro scale landscape ‘blue-prints’ of a southeastern Mollucan tradional settlement.
