Abstract
Based on the results of daily tests of mathematics lessons on multiplication, it shows that learning is less successful. In terms of the teacher's information, in daily learning it has been explained orally, given examples, and even given practice questions and gave students the opportunity to ask questions, but they did not take advantage of the opportunity. The low mastery of the ability to calculate multiplication in this study is due to the lack of precise learning models and the media they use. So that students become inactive, easily bored, and pay less attention to the teacher's explanation. Therefore, to improve the ability to calculate multiplication, a learning model with the right media is needed. One of them is a learning model using the media of nearby objects. This study aims to improve students' ability to calculate multiplication. The location of this research is SMP 14 Padang with 49 students, 25 female students and 24 male students. The data in this study were obtained from the results of interviews, questionnaires, results of action observations, and evaluation results. This research was conducted in two cycles. Each cycleis carried out based on the stages: (1) preparing an activity plan, (2) implementing actions, (3) observing, and (4) analyzing followed by reflection. The results showed that according to the researchers' observations on the preaction, students were less active in learning, easily bored, and the students' attention tothe teacher's explanation was very small. In the first cycle of action, the mastery of the material before learning was given 31%, after the activity took place the students showed: 58% active students, 30% moderate students, and 12% passive students. Student cooperation: 62% active students, 28% moderate students, and 10% passive students. While the average evaluation results are 68 students with 33 students who have completed and 16 students have not completed. Hasi the action in the second cycle of material mastery before the action was 48%. After the action was carried out, the students' activities were: active students 78%, moderate students 18% and passive students 4%. Student cooperation: 84% active students, 14% moderate students, and 2% passive students. The average evaluation result is 76 with 46 students complete and 3 students incomplete. Based on the results of the research above, it can be concluded that learning with the media of nearby objects can improve the ability to calculate multiplication, increase student activity, and increase student cooperation in completing group assignments.
