Abstract

Rock arts are mainly found in the eastern part of Indonesia such as South Sulawesi, Southeast Sulawesi, the Moluccas, and Papua. In 1994 a joint archaeological team Indonesia-France discovered the first rock art site in East Kalimantan, which was in the Gua Mardua. This article discusses the typology of rock art by using an inductive-descriptive approach, which then synthesized in the attempt to examine the use of caves and the function of rock arts in the past. The final result of this study is the knowledge of the existence of two different communities that had inhabited Gua Mardua, which apply different types of rock arts.
