Abstract

Morphologically, the form of traditional house buildings in East Sumba are the same. However, the things that make them different are the building material and the number of the pillars between the house of common people and the house ofthe rato or noble people. Sumba traditional house has specific identity namely the shape of the roof which resembles a tower with a loft inside or para-para levels (Hindi) for worshipping Merapu. The traditional houses are designed to give main space to carry out megalithical ritual which is known as Merapu in Sumba. The culture ofthe society and the nature can be integrated in harmony because there are factors of adaptation strategy. Adaption with invisible environment is done through Merapu which is believed to be the connector between human and God. The harmonic relation with dead ancestors is proved by the existance ofgrave yard near house. Adaption with otherpeople, which is simbolized through the same height ofthe house and adaptation with nature, is development which always mull over the sustainable aspect or continuity by using biological architecture. It means that development is still done without environment exploitation.
