CURRENT OBSERVATION BY USING CURRENT METER MOORING TECHNIQUE. The paper is based on the experience in participating the survey of current observation by using current meter mooring technique in Lombok Strait with a group of scientists from Lousiana State University. The equipments consist of ENDECO type 1174 and 174 current meter as well as sea-link acoustic release which are tied together on a cable, that form a series, and are straighten by buoys
and anchored on it's bottom. The procedure of setting of the mooring consist of several step of activities, beginning with the decision of position and depth measurement,
preparation of cables, supporting equipments and main equipments which will be installed, as well as lifting procedure, were described in detail. For Indonesia, the
application of the technique seems to be very expensive, needs sophisticated facility and high skilled personell as well. The technique contains several weaknesses. In waters with high biological process, the effect of fouling organisms form an important factor that determine the success of measurement. In waters with strong current,
the high variability of current velocity causes the exact depth of instruments vary greatly. Anyway, the application of the technique has several benefits i.e. shorten the ship operation time and is able to obtain data of the whole water layers in certain intended period. For the time being, the application of this technique by using less sophisticated current meter, such as ONO current meter, which is operated in shallow water is feasible to be carried out.
