Abstract
LAGOONS AND MANGROVE VEGETATION. Strickly speaking, the salt water lagoon is a body of water separated from the sea by a sand bar, and the shallow water area in the centre of a coral atoll or cay. If the terms is extended, it will be included calderas. There was three type of vegetation to be found associated with lagoon, namely mangrove, seagrass and salt marsh. In addition, marine algae will be associated with all three types of vegetation. In the tropical region, mangrove become primary feature in coastal lagoon than salt marsh. But seagrass appears to be associated only with mangrove. Generally, three major types of substrate upon which the angiosperms grow can be determined viz : : mud, sand and coral rocks, and boulders. But, the environmental factors vary depending upon the kind of lagoon.
In Indonesia, no information and study of the lagoon and its vegetation type has been done. Although we have a large area of coral reef and lagoon in the Indonesian waters as national asset, until recently there is remain still forgoten from ecological point of views. Due to lacking of ecological information and taking into account of their importance to the fisheries, the present article aimed to stimulate the Indonesian scientists to undertake research on it. The arrangement of the article based on the information collected from previous studied conducted by scientists all over the world.
