Abstract

MECHANISM AND POWER OF THE FISH SWIMMING. The study of the fish swimming was firstly conducted by ARISTOTLE. Until nineteenth century the BORELLI theory on the fish swimming was still accepted This theory mentioned that the caudal fin vibration was the main source that cause the fish movement The more advanced theory of MAREY showed that the fundamental mechanism of the fish movement is not only due to caudal fin vibration, but is also due to the overall body vibration that form the multidimensional sinous curve. There are two theories explaining the power that influence the fish swimming i.e. the recoil and large amplitude elongated body theory. In this paper, both theories were explained in detail. This knowledge has a wide application in the field of ichthyology and fisheries.
