SEAGRASS, IT'S HABITAT AND GEOGRAPHICAL DISTRIBUTION. Seagrass are the flowering plants that grow and develop in the shallow coastal waters of tropical and temperate seas. They can be found almost on all habitats, from coarse sand to soft muddy bottom, from intertidal zone to the depth of 10 m - 15 m and from open seas to estuaries.Altogether, there are 12 genera of these plants, seven of which inhabit tropical seas and the other five genera inhabit temperate region. Tropical seagrass are centered in two regions i.e. Western Indo Pacifik and Caribbean and Pacifik coast of Central America. All of the seven genera are found in Western Indo Pacific and in Caribbean only four genera can be found. There are 12 species of seagrasses inhabit Indonesian waters. One species, Thalassodendron ciliatum, is distributed only in the western part of the country, and two species i.e. Halophila spinulosa and H. decipiens have limited distribution.
