Abstract

HEAVY METALS IN MARINE ECOSYSTEM. Heavy metals are the chemical elements with specific gravity exceeding 5. In the nature, these elements exist in a very low concentration. The heavy metals content in sea water is usually between 10-5 to 10-2 ppm. Heavy metals are needed by marine organisms for their developmental process, but will be hazardous if their concentration is too high. The existing heavy metals in sea water will partly accumulate in certain organisms. Therefore, certain organisms can be used as bio-indicator in pollution study. Clams (bivalve mollusc) are the best bio-indicator for studying heavy metals pollution in marine environment.
