Abstract

BATAN has a duty to carry out the research of radioactive minerals, starting from exploration to mining. One of the area of interest for research is Kendawangan river basin in Marau, Ketapang, West Kalimantan. The purpose of the present research is to get information conerning the geological character, distribution and mineral resource potential of monazite. Further, acquired the availability and knowledge mastering of monazite mining potential from
alluvial deposit and placer in Kepatang. The methodologies used in the study are geological
mapping, analysis of satellite imagery, radiometric mapping, and geochemical sampling.
Landsat satellite image analysis using techniques of image ratio and color composite shows
the presence of ancient streams. Radiometric mapping of K, U, and Th in the aims of addition
to find anomalous areas is also useful to distinguish the types of lithology. The geology in the study site is composed by sandstone, granite plutonic rocks, volcanic rocks, and alluvium deposit. Potential areas containing monazite indicated on the river adjacent to the granite rocks. Results of geochemical sampling in the river of Airputih shows heavy mineral sample with quite high of monazite content whichis up to 8.73%.
