Sago starch phosphate was synthesized using sodium trimetaphhosphate (STMP) as a crosslinking agent. Microparticle was found by the emulsion evaporation method of water in oil emulsions’ containing starch phosphate in different surfactant compositions. Various Hydrophilic-Lipophilic Balance (HLB) values (4.5, 5.0, 5.5, and 6.0), were used in the emulsification process assisted by the sonication process at varying times from 25 to 30 minutes. The role of sago starch phosphate microparticle as a drug delivery matrix was investigated through encapsulation efficiency, drug loading, and drug release analysis with ascorbic acid as a drug model. The microparticle produced by emulsion composition with HLB value 5.5 (S3) showed the smallest size with a particle size of 544.93±24.47 nm at 25 min ultrasonication time. and this particle was used for drug delivery analysis with three mediums: 0.1 M HCl, 9% NaCl, and buffer saline phosphate (PBS) pH 7.4. the matrices had a drug loading value of 31.84%, an encapsulation efficiency of 90.74%, and a release rate of 86.29%.
