Abstract

This comprehensive survey provides systemic literature on three aspects of railway communication networks: the environment, network communication, and physical delivery. First, to understand the views of the environment, this review considers end-to-end requirements in high-speed railway communication and the demand for seamless communication to achieve the desired Quality of Service. The second perspective on network communication considers the properties of Information-Centric Networking, which leverages the inherent idea of using packet data as a first-class citizen and an embedded mobility technique. The last approach is delivery/physical environment, which directly corresponds to and interacts with the user’s device/equipment through large bandwidth leverage by light fidelity. The three mentioned aspects of railway communication are surveyed, which results in identifying critical factors to achieve a better quality of service in a high-speed railway environment: resource allocation, load balancing, and traffic engineering. The three critical factors need supporting parameters to realize the ever-demand content-hungry paradigm in a high-speed environment. Thus, the main contribution of this work is to present supporting parameters gathered from notable works that have been scrutinized for their appropriateness to serve network communication and content delivery under quality of service demand. This extensive survey supports the quality of service in a high-speed railway environment compatible with information-centric networking and light fidelity as physical delivery.
