Abstract

SOME NOTES ON POLYCHAETA. Polychaeta is an important component in the marine food chain, particularly for demersal fishes, Their body length ranges from two millimetres to several centimetres, even some species have several metres in length. They live in variable habitats, from muddy bottom, sandy bottom to coral reef They also have a wide distribution, vertically and horizontally. This worm can be found in shallow coastal waters or in deep water of thousands metres. Small shrimps, diatoms and organic debris form their main food. Several biological and ecological aspects of this worms i.e. systematics, morphology, habitat, distribution and life cycle as well as their role in the marine food chain will be discussed in this article.
