Synthesis of LiFePO4 in the Presence of Organic Reductant by Hydrothermal Method and its Characterization

Summary

Lithium iron phosphate, LiFePO4, was prepared in the presence of sucrose or citric acid as organic reductant by the hydrothermal treatment at 150 °C for 5 h and its characterization was done by thermo gravimetry/ differential thermal analysis (TG/DTA), X‐ray diffractometry (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR). The overall analysis indicate that the reductant plays an important role in controlling the size and the growth direction of the LiFePO4 crystals under hydrothermal conditions. Larger crystals up to mm in size could be formed by using citric acid as the reductant. Purity of the LiFePO4 prepared in the presence of citric acid was higher than that of sucrose. As a summary, citric acid was found to be an effective agent as reductant and carbon source.
